When I Need to Say No to the To-Do List (and Rest)

When I Need to Say No to the To-Do List (and Rest)

In my latest post on Simply Shine, I said that I have been in danger of getting over-whelmed. Life has been busy recently and there is only so much juggling I can do!  I’m not there and have caught it in time through self-awareness and recognising how it manifests for me. However now is the time to take a step back, reassess and to do that I need to say no to the to do list.

Wellbeing and Woes

Wellbeing and Woes

I haven’t provided an update on my wellbeing for a little while. Maybe that’s because I have been feeling a little lost with it. Maybe even despondant. Dealing with a chronic illness with unpredictable symptoms is not easy. But what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, yes? So what has been going on? What have I been doing for my wellbeing and is it okay?

This is how I explain my Invisible Illness

This is how I explain my Invisible Illness

This post was updated on 27/07/18

Invisible disability, or hidden disability, is defined as disabilities that are not immediately apparent. Although the disability creates a challenge for the person who has it, the reality of the disability can be difficult for others to recognise or acknowledge. Others may not understand the cause of the problem, if they cannot see evidence of it in a visible way. This can make it tricky for those of us who live with a chronic illness.

My symptoms vary in severity from week to week, day to day or even per hour sometimes. I find that really frustrating when I don’t know how much I can do in a day etc, however I am very aware that someone might look at me, think I look healthy and not understand why I say I can’t drive, make an arrangement or have to leave early. Knowledge is power as they say, so I thought it would be useful to write about how I explain my invisible illness.

How My Wellbeing Review Left Me Emotional

How My Wellbeing Review Left Me Emotional

Retrain Brain and Simply-Shine - Hello March

This post was updated on 24/03/18

Today is my Wellbeing Wednesday! The first Wednesday of the month where I share my plans for my wellbeing for the month ahead. I’ve recently set up a new format for this, you can read more about this here.

Well before I delve into the categories I should mention that I have set a challenge for March. #3forMe March Self-Care Challenge is about carrying out 3 self-care activities every day.  It is too easy to get caught up in the day to day and not spend time looking after your mind, body and soul. This challenge keeps me accountable to do just that.

I am so excited that a number of people are also taking part in both Shine in Self-Care Facebook group and Instagram. I am on a mission to get as many people taking care of themselves more. If you would like to get involved, click on either link above.

Otherwise read on to see what March wellbeing looks like for me.

This is the next instalment in The Journey series. To read the previous post in this series, click here

As the title suggests, my symptoms on that day were the worst they had been so far. I felt helpless, vulnerable and at the time I had no idea what was happening and why. Read on to see what happened and why I am actually really grateful it did and how it led to my diagnosis

How I went from collapse to conquer with my health

How I went from collapse to conquer with my health

Retrain Brain and Simply-Shine - Collapse to Conquer

This post was updated on 24/03/18

For the last 10 days or so, I’ve had a flare up of symptoms, which includes

  • Weakness in legs
  • Difficulty standing, walking
  • Drop falls
  • Severe tiredness; struggling to keep eyes open and speech slurred.

When I’ve felt like this, I’ve had little option but to rest. I haven’t had the brain power to do anything else. There is no doubt that having a flare up is frustrating etc. No one is going to enjoy them.  I had to cancel or change plans, including going to a birthday party of a good friend. Well there is never a good time to be ill though is there. So rather than dwell on it and think life is on hold, I acknowledge how I am feeling and accept it means I need to rest. That’s not wasting time. It is exactly what I need.
